SUMMER IN R17
Renault 17 was Renault’s first ever front-wheel drive coupé. Renault 17 truly stood out, most notably with its unique dashboard with four visors over the dials on the early versions. Another original feature was the iconic “wing seats”, added to the restyled 1976 generation. There was also a convertible version of the Renault 17 and - a much-sought after version for collectors - a Gordini sports model (with a 108 hp, 1,605 cm3 engine).

Here’s a fun fact you can use to impress your friends: in Italy, where 17 is an unlucky number (like 13 in a number of other countries), Renault 17 was renamed “177”. That name change can be explained by superstition, but we don’t know why Renault 17 was renamed in the US. There, Renault 17 went by the name of “Sports Coupé”.

TWINS
Designed by Gaston Juchet, Renault 15 and Renault 17 each had a different look to suit different customers’ tastes. Renault 15 was a more discreet, family-oriented car with large glazed surfaces, while Renault 17 opted for a more distinctive design, with a sportier, more eye-catching appearance. With its wide visible roll bar, side louvers and four front headlights, it was unmistakeable, turning heads wherever it went.

RALLYING
Renault 17 went down in Renault’s motor racing history as the car with which the marque claimed its first world rally championship win (group 2). In October 1974, three Renault 17s lined up for the 26th Press on Regardless rally in Michigan, USA. Despite tough competition, the small Renaults and their drivers performed wonders: Jean-Luc Therier won the race ahead of the Stratos driven by Sandro Munari, while Jean-Pierre Nicolas and Bernard Darniche consolidated Renault’s success, taking third and sixth place overall.
