In 1994, Renault unveiled to the public its Argos concept car, in tribute to the Argos System, a system that can locate distress beacons anywhere in the world via a network of orbiting satellites. Renault Argos was a futuristic vehicle that fascinated the public and motor industry experts. It was designed by Jean-Pierre Ploué, under the management of Patrick Le Quément.

Renault Argos was a concept car based on a Twingo featuring a fibreglass and aluminium body (an ultra-light composite used in Formula 1). Its water droplet shape gave it an aerodynamic look reminiscent of the observation satellites orbiting our planet.

Renault Argos was a three-seater barchetta (two in the front and just one in the rear!). The doors slid from front to back to nestle into the thickness of the rear wings. The design gave the impression that the driver sits inside a glass bubble. The vehicle's interior innovated by emphasising the comfort of the single rear seat, similar to a sofa.

Renault Argos was never put into production. The aim was to be a technological showcase for the French brand, demonstrate its ability to innovate and shatter conventions. The architecture of Argos was kept simple and ultra-minimalist, with a completely uncovered barchetta featuring no superstructure or even windscreen, just a retractable wind deflector.

In addition to the composite bodywork (in the front and rear wings, body sides, doors and bonnet), there was an extra touch of originality: the boot opened like a grand piano. And to echo its origin, the warning button above the dashboard and the air vents were reminiscent of Renault Twingo.
