With a loading capacity of 300 kg and an interior volume of almost 2 m3, Renault 4 F4 quickly became THE must-have van for tradesmen, government agencies and leading companies alike. It was also available in a long version, known as F6, which could carry up to 475 kg. Hardcore!

The “ask little” part of its motto made Renault 4 F4 van particularly popular. Economical to maintain and rock solid, it underwent a number of improvements over its life (reinforced rear torsion bars, extended wheelbase, wide wheels, a more powerful engine, front disc brakes, etc.).

One of Renault 4 F4’s remarkable features was its lift-up, removable domed rear panel on its roof. Nicknamed ‘girafon’ (giraffe roof), it allowed bulky objects to be stowed high up while keeping the rear door closed. The idea of this Renault-exclusive roof hatch would later appear on Express and then on Kangoo.

As well as its instantly recognisable ‘girafon’, Renault 4 F4 had a right-to-left opening rear door (the opposite of most of the competition). This glazed swing door made access from the pavement side easier for loading.
