THE FRIENDLY
FROG!
In 1992, Renault surprised the market with a car that was as cute as it was unexpected. Twingo was more than just a car: it was a complete concept conceived by project director Yves Dubreil and designer Jean-Pierre Ploué. Designed as a highly compact monospace with a “frog face”, Renault Twingo came in a single version when the first collection was launched, with a single engine, at a single price and in a choice of four colours.

THE OUTSIDE...
With its one-box shape and four wheels placed firmly in the corners, the little Renault Twingo offered astonishing interior space for its 3.43-metre long body (a bit like a Tardis!).

ON THE INSIDE
Inside, it was all about space. The idea behind Renault Twingo was to live “the life that goes with it” and Renault fitted it with an ingenious sliding and tilting rear bench, plus seats that could convert into beds. Work, Twingo, Sleep, Repeat?

Renault Twingo’s name is a contraction of Twist and Tango. With these origins in dance, Twingo naturally offers some memorable sounds.

FOR UNLIMITED FUN
The most remarkable limited editions of the first generation of Renault Twingo were called Benetton, Kenzo, Perrier and Elite. In 2007, with the second generation, Renault Twingo took a sportier turn with Gordini and R.S. versions.

COLOURS
When it was launched, Renault Twingo was only available in four colours. But what fabulous colours they were! Ultramarine, Indian yellow, Coral red and Coriander green (quite a change from the black, grey and white cars that predominated!). To give this cute-looking car an extra fun touch, you could also opt for a sunroof (canvas or glass).

MUST-HAVE
Renault Twingo was an unexpected dash of fun that marked its era. Its cheerful face was instantly recognisable and you couldn’t miss it with its zesty colours, rounded lines and even its slogan, familiar to anyone who saw the earlier animated ads. Its quirkiness paid: 2.5 million units of Renault Twingo in its numerous versions and limited editions (often tied to the world of fashion, such as Renault Twingo Kenzo or Benetton) were produced!

Bolstered by Renault Twingo's success, two new generations were produced. In 2007, Renault unveiled Renault Twingo 2. With the arrival of Laurens van den Acken in the design department in 2011, the second generation was restyled and produced in multiple versions (Nokia, Night & Day, Rip Curl, Miss Sixty, Mauboussin, Red Bull Racing and Purple, with an unusual ultra-violet colour with iridescent reflections). The third generation was launched in 2014 (with the engine to the rear again, like Renault 4CV and R8). It was available in Hipamena, Le Coq Sportif and La Parisienne limited editions. Renault Twingo will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2023.
