COMPETE WITH
THE GERMANS
In 1992, Renault Safrane replaced Renault 25 to embody the brand’s high end. The goal was to compete with the prestigious German saloons. To make this goal a reality, Renault launched Safrane Biturbo, presented in March 1992 at the Geneva Motor Show.

Safrane version V6 Quadra was chosen as the technical base for Renault Safrane Biturbo (its four-wheel drive provides very safe handling). Then Renault called on two German engineering companies. The coachbuilder Irmscher brought a hint of sportiness to the saloon’s design, while the engine manufacturer Hartge boosted the Safrane V6 Quadra’s V6 PRV engine.

The engine manufacturer Hartge adapted the Safrane V6 Quadra’s V6 PRV engine, adding 2 KKK turbos, to which Renault Safrane Biturbo owes its name. With these turbos, the 2963 cc V6 engine could develop 268 hp, for a top speed of 250 kph.

HIGH FIDELITY
HIGH FIDELITY
Between its exceptional engine and its elegant bodywork, Renault Safrane embodied luxury and sportiness. It was naturally available in Baccara finish (Renault’s prestige line), but also in an RXE version, with - the icing on the cake - dual-zone air-conditioning and a stereo system (exceptional at that time).

To add to Renault Safrane’s sporty look, the coachbuilder Irmscher added a spoiler and two special round fog lamps on the front, and developed an oblong exhaust as well as a small fin (for the stern). In addition, an electronic suspension was specially developed for this model, set on 17” double-spoke wheel rims.

THE LONG COURS
In 1994, Safrane Biturbo unexpectedly turned heads, twice! First, recognised on 15 May at the opening of the Monaco Grand Prix as a “safety car”. Then a few months later at the Motor Show, coachbuilder Heuliez presented an estate variant of Safrane Biturbo, named Long Cours. Elegant and refined, with its highly original stern, the proposal caused a buzz among the public.
