MARREAU
At the 1st Paris-Dakar rally, all sorts of vehicles took part; a Rolls-Royce or even a 1927 Renault KZ could be seen alongside the (more usual) 4x4s, buggies and side-cars. From the 2nd edition (in 1979), brothers Claude and Bernard Marreau (already known for holding the Alger-Le Cap record since 1971) really made a name for themselves by finishing just behind Genestier-Terblaut Lemordant’s winning Range Rover in their modest Renault 4. Renault therefore decided to support them in the future.

PIMP
MY RENAULT
Following on from the performances of the Marreau brothers in 1979, Renault decided to deliver to them in February 1980 a bare body, which the two motorsport buffs would pimp in their own style. This car entered Paris-Dakar in 1981, but it was in 1982 that the Marreau brothers’ Renault 20 Turbo 4x4 won the legendary race.

FRANKENCAR
FRANKENCAR
The Doctor Frankensteins of motorsport, the Marreau brothers transplanted elements of Renault 18 and Trafic onto a Renault 20 base. The front suspension was standard but the floor came from a rear-wheel drive Renault Trafic with a rigid axle. The exhaust emerged spectacularly from the bonnet, running along the windscreen then the roof. The rear bench was removed (of course!) and replaced with a 200 L tank, powering a Renault 18 turbo engine boosted to around 140 hp, coupled with a modified 5-speed gearbox adapted to the 4X4 concept.
